J'ai eu récemment la délicieuse surprise de recevoir un dessin du talentueux Danny Roberts. Touchée par son talent, j'ai immédiatement pensé au portraits torturés et expressifs de Egon Schiele (comme Rumi l'a si bien dit), avec un coté graphique et coloré qui rappelle Toulouse Lautrec et ses séries de portraits de cocottes parisiennes. Cependant, si Schiele déforme presque ses modèles, Danny Roberts les sublime avec sa propre fantasmagorie, par un style caméléon, qui s'adapte à merveille au modèle et à sa personnalité. Chacun des dessins de cette série de blogueuses possède sa propre indépendance et personnalité, le trait prend corps avec le modèle et lui crée son propre univers. Serait-il le Toulouse-Lautrec de la blogosphère ?

I recently had the wonderful surprise of getting an illustration from the talented Danny Roberts. I was touched by his stroke of genius, which as Rumi has aptly remarked, made me think of the tortured and expressive portraits of Egon Schiele, combined with a graphic and colorful quality that immediately reminded me of Toulouse-Lautrec and his series of sketches depicting tarty Parisian women. However, if Schiele almost deconstructs his models, Danny Roberts glorifies his with his brand of fantasy, revealing a cameleon-like style that marvelously blends with the subject and her personality. Each of the sketches of this string of female bloggers has its distinct character and appeal, and the artist paints in such a way that it revolves around the character and her place in the universe. Could Danny Roberts be the Toulouse-Lautrec of the blog world?

Pandora

Vous avez été nombreux à me demander l'origine du titre de mon blog, je pense qu'il est temps d'expliquer le pourquoi et le comment. Pandore provient de la mythologie grecque, une femme possedant tous les dons (en grec panta dôra : celle qui a tous les dons.) envoyée par Zeus à Epimethée, le frère de Promethée, pour se venger du vol du feu. Elle était accompagnée d'une jarre (ou boîte selon les versions ), contenant les maux de l'humanité, ainsi que l'espérance. On connait la suite, Pandore rongée de curiosité ouvre la boîte, les maux se répandent sur l'humanité, excepté l'esperance, qui reste enfermée dans la jarre.

Many of you have asked me about how I came up with my blog name. I think it's time to explain the how and the why. Pandora comes from Greek mythology about a woman endowed with all gifts (from the Greek panta dôra, meaning, "she who bears all gifts"). She was sent by Zeus to Ephimetheus, Prometheus' brother as a punishing act for stealing the secret of fire. She came with a jar (or a box, in some versions) containing all the evils of mankind, including hope. And so, as we know, the rest of the story goes : Pandora, consumed with curiousity, opens the box, releases all the evils leaving hope inside.

D'un point de vue personel, je vois ce mythe comme une genèse de la mysoginie, qu'on peut aisément rapprocher de Eve et du pêché originel. La femme comme source de tous les maux, comme perte de l'humanité. Cependant, pour les paiens, elle est moins vue comme une fatalité. En effet, en apportant le malheur aux hommes, elle leur donne le courage de lutter conte l'adversité, et contribue à leur amelioration. J'aime cette dualité, mais je ne m'y identifie pas, le titre Pandora est surtout une expression de la fascination que j'eprouve pour ce mythe.

From my point of view, this is the myth from which misogyny arises, just like Eve and the idea of original sin. The woman becomes the source of all evils and the loss of humanity. However, for pagans, she is less regarded as a fatality. Although she inflicts misery towards men, she gives them the courage to fight adversity and contributes to the betterment of mankind. I prefer this duality although I can't relate to it.. For me, Pandora, expresses above all, my fascination towards this myth.

On trouve parfois une relation entre monde paien et monde chretien dans l'histoire de l'art, ainsi plus haut, le Eva Prima Pandora (Eve, première Pandore.) de Jean Cousin, ainsi que le Eve Pandora de Adolf Mossa, qui mêle les deux iconographies, le serpent d'Eve cotoie la boîte de Pandore.

The history of art sometimes show us a relation between the pagan and christian worlds. Take the case of Le Eva Prima Pandora (Eve, the first Pandora) by Jean Cousin as well as Eve Pandora by Adolf Mossa, who interplays two icons: the serpent of Eve alongside Pandora's box.

Ce mythe se retrouve très représenté dans l'histoire de l'art, il est intéressant de se pencher sur l'évolution de sa representation. A l'image des mythes de Salomé ou Judith, il permet une allegorie de la femme, que ce soit en tant que symbole de beauté, ou en tant que symbole de cupidité. Pandore devient femme-enfant ou femme fatale, mais sa representation est un support à la sublimation de la femme.

It is interesting to ponder about the evolution of this myth which is so highly represented in the art world. The images of Salomé or Judith are allegorical representations of the female form much as a symbol of beauty as well as excessive desire. Pandora becomes the child-woman or the femme fatale, but its representation stands for the exaltation of womanhood.

D'une façon moins évidente, ce titre se rattache aussi au film de Louise Brooks, "Pandora's box", dont le titre français était "Loulou". La boucle est bouclée.

In a less evident way, this title also gives reference to a film of Louise Brooks', "Pandora's Box", or "Loulou" in French.So, there you have it. As the French would say, "La boucle est bouclée".

Peintre allemand sulfureux, qui m'a séduit par son oeuvre habitée de passion et de violence, à l'image de sa touche, libre et expressive, qui balaye le tableau et l'habite.
Chez Corinth, domine une profonde exaltation de la chair, qui se traduit dans ses nombreuses études de nus, sensuels et voluptueux, où le peintre recherche l'expression de la vie. Cette peinture à caractère charnel trouve une alternative morbide dans ses scènes d'abattoirs.

This fiery and intense German painter blew me away with his free and expressionistic style that conveys passion and violence. True to form, he had the ability to sweep over and inhabit the canvas with his brushstrokes.The Corinth Exhibit is an excessive homage to the flesh displaying the numerous nude, sensual and voluptuous compositions that the artist created as a means to express life. Notorious for his strong carnal appetite, this artist alternatively found morbid pleasure in doing slaughterhouse scenes.

Les sujets mythologiques et religieux sont très présents dans l'oeuvre de Corinth, cependant ils deviennent pretexte à l'etude de la chair. Le peintre désacralise le sujet, qu'il rend presque trivial. Ainsi, chez Corinth, les scènes de sacrifices ou de bacchanales dominent, la violence ou la debauche s'expriment sur le corps, grâce à cette touche violente.

Mythical and religious characters were very much visible in Corinth's works, albeit, as a pretext to study the human figure. The artist desecrated images by rendering his subjects as seemingly worthless.
A dominant presence at the Corinth exposition were the sacrificial and bacchic scenes. Themes of violence and debauchery were depicted on the bodies with vicious brushstrokes.

Cette exposition présente aussi de nombreux autoportraits, mises en scène grandiloquentes tendant presque à la parodie, ainsi que des portraits, Corinth était le portraitiste le plus en vogue à Berlin au début du 20eme siècle.

Pour ma part, j'ai été touchée par ses natures mortes, où l'expression atteint son paroxysme grace à une touche encore plus violente, à la limite de l'abstraction.

Corinth was the most in demand portrait artist in Berlin at the turn of the 20th century. The exhibit presents numerous self-portraits, grandiose scenes bordering on parody as well as other people's portraits.

Personally, I'm impressed by his still-lifes. Within the bounds of abstract art, he drove himself into a rabid frenzy applying his signature ferocious strokes to the paintings.
